Wish it becomes more efficient in developing and validating useful and practical standards !!perhaps a suggestions form the input of which is connected with RSS feed for those who sign up with these interests ... bit like a customer support system where questions can be left. For example, I know there is ASP/.NET code to render a specific page from a pdf in a browser window without all the clutter of Adobe or whatever - just like a jpg is rendered ... is anyone using this as I would be interested in talking to themNoeasier way to find standards, a way to navigate to cover most of what the site wants to provide; way too much navigation to navigateiconvert the content to a Wiki so it can be continuously migrated and changed...you know, like the web! ;)Members databaseLet's keep the meeting real, faithful to the society core mission and goals, and driven by overall membership interests, rather than "convenient" sponsorship.Don't do another BioBlitz. Make it a field trip option, or two, to see actual CitizenScience or field work taking place. This year's BioBlitz consumed the larger meeting, and the reason for us attending, and nothing worth note came from it. It was a great attempt, but this is not the area of expertise for most people attending TDWG and I think it didn't show a good example to people who aren't familiar with actual surveys and sampling.2Make sure you stay integrated with the real world.STDWG does great work, but needs to accelerate the pace if it is to remain relevant.-Links to past meetings. Membership directorypractical examplesLess! Generally make it simplerI think we have over complicated it because it arose during a period when the organisation was resourced. Several projects have moved away to use Google Code and I think that is a good thing. We could get away with just the CMS or even just static pages and someone who is the contact point to edit them. As a repository for standards and outputs from meetings it is very important. - these are obviously just my thoughts. Other people my find other bits useful.More content for each of the standards and projects. As it is there is very little content on the TDWG website. I can see all the standards and projects, but when I want to find more information on a specific standard, there is hardly anything there, or it is extremely hard to find.Even more important than having abstracts of papers and posters available before the conference is having sufficient documentation before the parallel discussions. I'll happily sit through a paper of which I did not know before what exactly it is about, but going into a discussion and even contribute to it without knowing in advance what is going to be discussed, or whether it will be a discussion or a series of presentations or a mix of both, is quite something else. I also thought that this conference was extremely light on content, compared to other (non-TDWG) conferences I have been to. If future conferences are like this it will be very hard to justifying to my employer attending them. I enjoyed bioblitz (didn't do much blitzing though), but do not think it should happen at a TDWG conference. The idea of CodeBlitz is quite good I think and I would have gladly made my taxonomic expertise, which is much more considerable than my programming skills, available, if I had known in advance there was a project for which it would have been useful, but again there was hardly any information before the conference. Even harder than finding information about the TDWG conference was finding information about Biofinity. Until a couple of days before the conference the only thing that could be found on the web about Biofinity was that it is a brand of contact lenses. BTW, the Biofinity thing should never have happened in conjunction with a TWDG conference. Also, people in TDWG should grow up and stop the twitter crap.&Nothing at present that I can think ofdNavigating the website can be difficult - I think a more user friendly interface could be produced.I would greatly appreciate a 'DarwinCore for Dummies' booklet that can be easil understood by all students in biology. An general introduction on Biodiversity Databases would also be great.I would like to have access to study case on use of the standards. This will help me to sort out what is/isn't relevant for my work. And perhaps list advantages/disadvantages of each standards.Perhaps a presentation of (and by) each member could be useful for finding each other to build networks - including research interests and past and current TDWG projects and activities each member attend...?I am happy if the website keep the current focus on the biodiversity informatics standards. These standards could perhaps be be given even more focus.a summary page of tools presented in TDWG with their web links A map of the relations between the interest groups - A global explanations in what way all these groups contribute to TDWG, Biodiversity standards, etc Cloud of tags on the home page Photos of the executive committee members and short text on thier expertise and involvement in Biodiveristy informatics standards - put faces on the Executive committee :-)cA Bioblitz in Africa ! Ghana could be a good place for a TDWG meeting with a light bioblitz testingHow about some example HTML code, etc., showing implementation of the TDWG standards! Right now there is info on the data types, but nothing showing best practices for implemeting these in web pages. This would be helpful....AI usually go to TDWG to look for standards information. I have to admit I hadn't noticed the database links until taking this survey. My quick impression is that the projects and networks databases could be quite useful for browsing what people are up to. The events database at the moment is rather empty - of course keeping that filled is an ongoing effort. I would like it to be easier to find both accepted standards and whatever the working groups feel like sharing - sometimes it takes some digging to find the latest version of a developing standard or vocabulary.RI'm sorry I missed it this year. Hope I'll be able to find a way to go next year. The documentation about the stand< ards is not easy to follow. Old docs, deprecated versions, etc as well as the lack of more textual, tutorial documents that explain the reasons, the issues and the uses makes it difficult to find things.cTDWG has to be more active to reach a wider audience. TDWG is a small-to-medium-sized organization. There are many positive and important aspects of the way TDWG works as a *small* organization. In small organizations, new ideas and initiatives come from individuals with energy, and solutions to problems often emerge spontaneously. People in the organization tend to know each other. One person can make a difference-- a big difference-- but trust and personal relationships are important in getting anything done. The leadership does not take a strong hand, but tries to enable bottom-up initiatives. However, a negative aspect of a small organization is that there are never enough volunteers. Another negative aspect is that the familiarity and spontaneity and relationship-dependence of a small organization can be unwelcoming to newcomers, who may feel that they need to be part of the "in" group in order to know what's happening and to participate. It takes special effort for a small organization to be welcoming. At a conference, TDWG needs to act like a bigger organization that is more organized and clearer about information and procedures (all of those spontaneous changes in venue). Small organizations have trouble with stable long-range planning-- they lack inertia and are apt to renegotiate priorities frequently, changing from one thing to another. This is another area where TDWG should try to act like a bigger organization (but not too much bigger). In a large organization, there is a hierarchy and a procedure for everything important. TDWG seems to have too many rules and procedures. A small organization cannot afford to have too many rules or a too-rigid hierarchy. In a small organization, these become burdensome to members, who end up finding ways to skirt the rules and work around authority.Download-able Biology taxonomy (incl, Kingdoms, Phylums, Genuses, Species). Specially, developing countries. Establish chapters in these countries for easier collaboration and communication. Thanks for giving me the chance to provide you with my feedback.jI think the Citizen Science event generated good press and that we could do more of that in the future. It took too much effort by TDWG people so I recommend a better linkage with local groups and a better model of how to get the data into GBIF I think there could be training funds found to facilitate international cooperation working with GBIF and EOL.XMore info of the projects on how TDWG standards are beeing implemented and the benefits.I would like to listen to the presentations of the projects that already have something to present (at least a bit) and not projects that have not even started but planned. It is OK to mention these but to spend the whole of the presentation on how this is planned is a bit too much. I suggest that the quality and usefulness of the presentation/project should be judged with sticter criteria. ParticipationTThe "step by step guide" to build information infrastructure with links to standards+My best wishes to TDWG for the coming yearstAs a user of the TDWG Geographical standard, I would like to see that as a current standard rather than a prior one.zIt would help in planning the participation to fix the place and date of the meeting, as well as the main topics, earlier.A TDWG service as: A easy-to-search catalogue of all standards used in biodiversity (including ISO codes) in general with: - Links to downoad them - Those recommended by TDWG - By which project/programme/organisation/institution ... they are used (possible update directly by the TDWG members themselves for instance) and also a downloaded list of converters between standards when they are available (e.g. ISO country codes <-> TDWG level4)!Active News and RSS announcementshTDWG should publish open access, "real", peer-reviewed proceedings associated to an appropriate journal.`devote more attention on keeping the standards page, working group pages and rs.tdwg.org in sync not reallyA vision statement supported by a strategic argument explaining how the work of TDWG supports (or is meant to support) the biodiversity science community. This would cover not only the successful examples where TDWG standards are gluing together major collaborative projects to share data within and beyond the partnership. And most importantly, current efforts to move forward with new collaborations using the work of TDWG.6An official group picture of all attendees every year!3Earlier postings of meeting schedule and logistics.Doing demos in the coffee room and during breaks was a very nice way to interact as in France. Some of the first day talks at WH were just a waste of time. Very uneven quality. TDWG needs short term software development, not standards development, goals. By date X, these people/this working group will have interoperability or integration working for a new capability linking applications Y and Z. The point being to show how a new technology or a new perspective can contribute to the biodiversity informatics infrastructure. The way talks were assembled this year seemed obscure, it wasn't clear how the plenary talks were picked, and having no contributed papers unless there was a session organized around that particular theme was a little strange. Was the selection process intentional? It feels like TDWG has to make some decisions about how seriously to take itself, the fork in the road seems to be either: (1) slip into a travelling tea party, where chatter and gossip during the breaks are the main forms of intel, or (2) strengthens it's role as a professional society to raise the quality of presentations and service the members more effectively with more relevant training, workshop, demonstration and presentation activities. I guess that implies more effort and more funding to organize at a higher level. Posters got short shrift, too crowded and too jammed in tight to be viewed comfortably. Even given the marginal contribution a poster makes to the whole event, it would be nice if at least there was an inviting open space with coffee for poster presenters to have any hope of engaging in a dialog with a viewer - as TDWG did in France. I loved the lightning talks because they helped make TDWG more modern, and it seems stuck in old methods of communication & ways of planning. While very cool & enjoyable, the full day of BioBlitz probably wasn't the best use of attendees' time. I would welcome a future BioBlitz to be held before or after TDWG, but not one that takes up an entire day of the schedule.qBetter integration of Web2.0 tools like Facebook, LinkedIn, Flickr-group. The Execute Meetings archive on the website contains only of a 4 years old promise of minutes, which were never posted. The Executive meets in a non-public fashion prior to the conference, the finances are private, and no minutes are ever posted, nor circulated to the membership. Upcoming important business such as elections become known by word-of-mouth rather than official communication, and the way public business operations are conducted falls far short of professional and quality standards. TDWG is too big and too important of an organization to allow itself to continue with this old-boy network type of image that this is portraying to newcomers.Leading up to the CodeBlitz I realized it would be really great to have on TDWG a database to open source tools, algorithms, libraries, etc for processing biodiversity data. This would include the license, link to source, primary languages used, etc. This community seems to do a lot of recreating of code that already exists, and perhaps this is because there is no central registry of code they can easily pick through.I don't think reports on progress of individual projects are appropriate for plenary sessions. TDWG is about standards so I'm only interested in hearing progress of standard development, needs for new or modified standards, or tools and project directly relating to standards (data transformation, information networks, global data repositories). Project updates should be left to parallel sessions or demos like computer demos are treated. The content of those presentation often appeals to a minority of the audience.I have the feeling the current website requires quite a lot of maintenance (both system and content). Things that are unnecessary should be dropped. Working groups that have been inactive for 1.5 years should be removed.>I think that some of these meetings could be split out into video conferences. There did not seem to be much coordination between projects with the same goals and a few video conferences scheduled during the year might help improve this situation. Then there could be some coherent summary talks at the annual meeting.Database modelsSimplify the content. Too much effort is required to maintain things not really used. Get Google Analytics on the site and see what is used, and what is not - no need to speculate on what people use, when you can quantify it.cMore communication about expectations for Bioblitz and Codeblitz.
